Closing the circle on the Wheel of Wellness: Building a growing community health initiative.
Spinning off the success from the first four years of Lake Region Healthcare’s Community Challenge, it was time to expand the definition of wellness and focus on more than physical activities alone. In previous years, the challenges were based on exercising and physical activity tracked by either minutes or miles. For its fifth year, Lake Region Healthcare (LRH) wanted to create awareness around all the dimensions of wellness. H2M worked with LRH to create the WHEEL OF WELLNESS! The wheel concept came from being well rounded in one’s health and creating consistent habits to incorporate the challenge in everyday life.
“We’ve gotten really good at moving during the winter months as a community,” said LRH Wellness Director, Natalie Knutson. “Last winter we exercised more than the 238,900 miles needed to reach the moon. The community actually surpassing the moon by about 19,000 miles, which was just fabulous,” she added. Knowing it would be hard to top that goal, Knutson said LRH set out to expand the challenge in a different way. “We talk a lot about all the dimensions of total health and how overall health is so much more than spending time exercising and watching what you eat,” Knutson said. “So we got creative and decided to try challenging people to complete activities in every component of wellness.”
Those components are Environmental, Social, Intellectual, Spiritual, Occupational, Emotional, Physical, and Nutritional health. To learn more visit https://www.lrhc.org/wow/.
